Cisco Says 90% of IP Traffic to be Video in 2013

Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch wrote a very interesting article yesterday about Cisco’s latest estimates of the growth of the internet between now and 2013. Cisco projects that global IP traffic will reach two-thirds of a zettabyte, and 90% of consumer IP traffic (which is the majority of global traffic) will be video in some form. Two-thirds of that will be in internet video alone, as opposed to P2P or other sources. Cisco also estimates that 64% of mobile data traffic will be video.

We should take these numbers with a grain of salt, however- Schonfeld points out that Cisco certainly needs this type of growth to keep selling their products at the same pace.  Despite that, this certainly means that we’re nowhere near the end of the web video revolution. The launch of Hulu and new interfaces like YouTube XL are drops in the bucket compared to where we will be in four or five years.

This is great news for web marketing, too. If web video really does become the majority of internet use, advertising will have to optimize further, providing higher quality content better aimed at the appropriate demographics. That’s why VideoArmy is always finding the newest trends and evolving with the industry. It’s an exciting time to be in web video, and we’re right up front.

Here is an image of the eye activity of searches performed on Google.com. You can see that only 8-10% of people actually look at the adwords on the page. Ha! Good thing we secure links in the organics! The good news is, that people do look all the way down the page giving all 10 links more views. Good luck if you are on the second page.
